This listing is for a leather sculpture of the Virgin Mary.

I have seen masks, sculptures, and molds out of leather but I have never seen a freestanding piece. So I had the idea but then doing it is another thing entirely! I made one Mary sculpture last year and since everyone was upset that there was only one…..I have been listening and now have a couple for you to choose from.

When I create these pieces it is always a sunny day and usually with a stiff breeze because they do so much better when I have those two elements to help me. It is a process of getting the leather really wet, all the way through. Getting the consistency of the “mix” just right. Sometimes they have to be redipped and sometimes it is just adding some of the “mix” here or there to get the result. All of the sculptures like this are formed by hand and I use stones, rubber bands, clamps, and even leaves to get the desired effect. Sunny days are great because they dry faster and with a piece like this drying fast was good and bad. It take a lot of time to get the leather to stretch in just the right places, like with this piece in her praying hands, but also to get the leather in a position to look like her flowing robes, etc.

It is fun to make decisions along the way too…..to imagine what this is going to look like in the end. Do I want to actually make out her face? The Virgin Mary also challenged me to stop at the right time. We all have a tendency to over-work things. She has taught me constraint with this particular thing the entire way.

She is made out of saddle deerskin and has a chocolate deerskin under her robe at the bottom. She stands 9 1/2″ tall. Her torso is about 10″ wide by 7″ deep from front to back. She is very lightweight and very stable. I have branded an edge around her face.
